Frequently asked questions
- Are my files uploaded?
- No. Hashing uses the browser's Web Crypto API on your device; nothing is transmitted.
- Should I still use MD5 or SHA-1?
- Only for non-security checks such as matching a vendor's published checksum or detecting accidental corruption. Both are broken for security purposes — use SHA-256 or SHA-512 there.
- Why does my hash not match the vendor's?
- Most often the download was incomplete, or you hashed different text — a trailing newline or different line endings change the result completely.
- Can I recover the original from a hash?
- No. Hashing is one-way by design.
